Making a DIY wreath

Christmas is coming and creating a wreath is a wonderful way to incorporate natural elements into your festive decorations and show off highlights from your garden. Here's a step-by-step guide to making your own Christmas wreath:

Gather materials needed: You can use a wire wreath frame or a foam wreath form, available at craft stores. You will also need pruning shears for cutting foliage and decorative additions, such as ribbon, cinammon sticks and pinecones.

Collect greenery: Gather an assortment of evergreen branches and other garden foliage. Aim for a variety of textures and colours to make your wreath visually appealing.

Prepare the wreath base: If you're using a wire wreath frame, secure the end of the floral wire to the frame. If you're using a foam wreath form, you can use floral pins or hot glue to secure the end of the wire.

Create & attach bundles of greenery: Bundle together small clusters of greenery. Mix different types of foliage in each bundle for a textured and varied look. Lay a bundle of greenery on the wreath form, and secure it with floral wire. Wrap the wire tightly around the stems, ensuring the bundle is firmly attached to the frame

Overlap and Layer: Continue attaching bundles, slightly overlapping each one and layering them to cover the entire wreath form. When you reach the starting point, secure the last bundle tightly and trim any excess wire.

Add decorative elements: Integrate decorative elements like pinecones, berries, or ribbon into the design. Secure these additions with floral wire or hot glue.

Fill in gaps: Inspect your wreath for any gaps or uneven areas. Fill in these spaces by adding smaller bits of greenery or additional decorative elements.

Create a hanger: Use a piece of wire or ribbon to create a loop for hanging. Attach it securely to the back of the wreath. If you want to prolong the freshness of your wreath, consider spraying it with an anti-desiccant or water sealant. This can help prevent the greenery from drying out too quickly.
